The History of the Gaming Shoe

When I first heard someone talking about the gaming shoe I thought they were talking about some kind of trainer or sports shoe I had no idea they were talking about a devise used in a casino for holding cards, but that's exactly what it is. Why was it called a shoe? Well apparently the earlier versions resembled a ladies high heel shoe and was often black or red in colour.
It was first introduced into Las Vegas casinos in 1961 and it was invented by a man called John Scarne, an American, who was recognised as one of the worlds leading magicians and card manipulators. He was also known for advising casinos on the various possibilities of cheating.
Prior to the 'Dealing Shoe' blackjack was being dealt form a single deck - card counters paradise!
The shoe has many advantages, it can hold up to eight packs of cards which means that more games can be dealt in a night because it reduces the time normally needed to shuffle between games. It also reduces the opportunity for dealers to cheat and makes card counting more difficult thus increasing the house edge.
The first time I played blackjack in Vegas it was with one pack of cards, which meant you could spend longer at the table and while you were playing drinks were free! Now of course in many casinos you are not allowed to drink at the table which is probably one of the reasons why live online casino gaming is becoming so popular. Nowadays Dealing Shoes come in many different shapes and sizes. They can hold anything from 2 to 8 packs of cards.
The dealer will shuffle all the cards and then place them in the shoe. A plastic card is then inserted into the cards. The dealer usually asks the punter to do it and when this card is drawn the cards are reshuffled, this it makes it harder for card counters as there are always cards that are not played.
I do tend to play at the live online casinos now, because it is more convenient but I do miss the little buzz I used to get from placing that little plastic card in the shoe and waiting for those first cards to be dealt.
